a new kind of life

There's no easy place to begin, so much has happened in the last month. I'll just start by saying, I had no idea how much I didn't know. This little creature finally stormed into our lives, taking all the hostages she could find, re-educating us along the way. We've learned how little sleep a person needs to function, how long a person can go without washing their hair, what breasts are really for, how expansive our hearts are, and most importantly, how full of wonder our normal life is. Everything is new and fascinating to behold through the eyes of our milk-drunk little frog.

For those that missed the story, here's a quick run down. After about 12 hours of labor, we welcomed Honey Laine Short into the outside world on June 10, 2008 at 10:41 am. After many hot, sticky days of anticipation, she finally came to us in a little hurry. It was a fast labor, once things really got rolling, advancing from 3 cm to finished birth in 4 hours. Kim, our midwife, was here to help, mostly by staying out of our way. The last hour was spent in the birthing pool that Kim had brought over some weeks before, finally ending in a great catch by Travis. The stats: 9 lbs 5 oz, 22 inches long.

That's a perfect summary of new motherhood.
Shalom to you all!
